The Arctic & Iceland (The Maximum Totality Route)
For those who want the longest duration of darkness and the most dramatic scenery, the North Atlantic is the place to be. Here, the sun will be higher in the sky (approx. 25°), making for easier viewing than in Spain.
1. Albatros Expeditions – Ocean Albatros
- Route: Reykjavik, Iceland to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland.
- The Eclipse Experience: This is for the “hardcore” enthusiast. The ship will anchor at the Blosseville Coast in East Greenland—the point of near-maximum totality.
- Highlights: You’ll experience 2 minutes and 17 seconds of darkness in a remote, ice-filled fjord. The expedition includes Zodiac landings and lectures from resident astronomers.
2. Cunard – Queen Mary 2
- Route: 14-night Norway and Iceland (Southampton to New York).
- The Eclipse Experience: On August 12, the QM2 will be in Reykjavik for an overnight stay.
- Highlights: Guests can witness totality (approx. 1 minute) from the massive upper decks of this legendary ocean liner.
